Cartagena to Lima (Callao)

Cruise Itinerary

Day One - Cartagena, COLOMBIA

Welcome to Cartagena; bursting with charisma, and Caribbean allure. The best way to explore this vibrant city is on foot, allowing you to fully absorb its distinct South American ambiance. Wander through the maze of cobblestone streets, travel back in time, and appreciate one of the Caribbean’s most enchanting destinations.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, Cartagena exemplifies an extensive and well-preserved system of military fortifications in South America. Its strategic position on a secluded bay facing the Caribbean Sea made it a crucial stopover for trade between Europe and the West Indies during the era of commercial and naval exploration. Remnants of this history can still be seen on the walls of many beautiful buildings in the old town. The magnificent city is encircled by a fortress that extends for 11 kilometers, dating back to 1533, and once welcomed Sir Francis Drake, who infamously set fire to 200 buildings during his 1586 visit. Today, despite its 16th-century origins, Cartagena is a modern paradise filled with vibrant colors. Fuchsia bougainvillea spills from turquoise balconies, while well-preserved colonial structures in bright hues line the streets.

Seek refuge from the heat and embrace the uniquely Colombian atmosphere by settling into a local bar, devouring a plate of empanadas, and enjoying a Guaro – the colloquial term for aguardiente, the country’s national spirit.

Day Two - Day at sea

Days spent at sea offer an ideal chance to relax, de-stress, and slow down. Whether you prefer hitting the gym, enjoying a spa day, going whale watching, catching up on your reading, or simply soaking up the sun, these tranquil ocean days provide a wonderful counterbalance to the bustling days spent exploring the shore.

Day Three - Panama Canal Transit, PANAMA

Discover the incredible Panama Canal, an extraordinary feat of engineering and one of history's most ambitious waterways. This remarkable canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, cutting through the heart of a continent and eliminating the perilous journey around South America and Cape Horn. Experience the grandeur of this achievement as your ship navigates through its expansive locks and massive lakes.

Construction began in 1881 by the French but was left unfinished due to high costs until the United States completed the project in 1914. Following the route of the Panama Railway established in 1855, the locks elevate ships, regardless of size, by 26 meters above sea level to access the canal's higher channel. Recently added locks enable the canal to accommodate larger vessels.

As you exit the confines of the locks, you will enter the canal's channel, sailing through the heart of Panama. Wide lakes are interconnected by meticulously carved sections of the canal that traverse lush landscapes. Don't miss the Culebra Cut, the most challenging segment to construct. The Bridge of the Americas, a magnificent arched structure finished in 1962, spans the Pacific Entrance, alongside several other impressive bridges you will pass beneath on your 51-mile journey, including the newer Centennial Bridge and the Atlantic Bridge near Colon.

Day Four - Day at sea

Days spent at sea offer an ideal chance to relax, de-stress, and slow down. Whether you prefer hitting the gym, enjoying a spa day, going whale watching, catching up on your reading, or simply soaking up the sun, these tranquil ocean days provide a wonderful counterbalance to the bustling days spent exploring the shore.

Day Five - Manta, ECUADOR

As the location of Ecuador's second-largest seaport, Manta stands out as one of the country's key economic cities. Far from being a quaint coastal village, visitors to Manta will discover a vibrant urban centre featuring expansive beaches, towering high-rises, city dwellers, and an abundance of seafood. This city is famously marked by a giant tuna statue that greets guests, highlighting the significance of seafood in local culture. Once a modest fishing village, Manta has transformed into a thriving industry, with ultra-fresh seafood—primarily tuna—taking center stage. Consequently, no visit to Manta is complete without indulging in at least one of the local delicacies. Food enthusiasts will delight in the chance to savour not only delicious tuna ceviche but also expertly prepared squid, octopus, lobster, and inventive South American-style tapas. For those seeking more than just culinary delights, the Archaeological Museum of the Central Bank of Manta offers an impressive collection of ceramics from the Manteño-Huancavilca culture, which thrived between 800 and 1550 A.D. While Manta's seafood, beaches, and boutiques may be enough to satisfy many, it's also worth noting that the charming town of Montechristi is just a short 20-minute journey away. Hop on a colorful (and authentically vibrant) Chivas bus to reach the birthplace of the Panama hat, which, interestingly, has no ties to Panama itself! This picturesque village has preserved much of its old Spanish charm, with its hat makers being the main attraction.

Day Six - Day at sea

Days spent at sea offer an ideal chance to relax, de-stress, and slow down. Whether you prefer hitting the gym, enjoying a spa day, going whale watching, catching up on your reading, or simply soaking up the sun, these tranquil ocean days provide a wonderful counterbalance to the bustling days spent exploring the shore.

Day Eight - Lima (Callao), PERU

Bringing vibrant colour and culture to the dry Peruvian landscape, Lima is a city adorned with impressive colonial grandeur. Established in 1535, this expansive capital thrives along a breezy oceanfront, making it one of the largest desert cities in the world. A city of stark contrasts, nearly 10 million residents inhabit diverse living conditions. Visit to experience the unfiltered essence of this richly textured destination, filled with ancient history, colonial artifacts, and delightful flavors. Emerging from the misty shroud of the garua—a persistent fog that envelops Lima during winter—you will discover one of South America's most culturally dynamic cities. Once the capital of Spanish colonists, a trip to Plaza de Armas will immerse you in the heart of the historic center. The Basilica Cathedral of Lima presides over Plaza Mayor; listen for the rhythmic stomps of boots as the Changing of the Guards ceremony draws spectators to the Government Palace. However, the history of this area stretches much deeper, as pre-Columbian cities and temples rise from the dusty ground nearby. Grand museums proudly display treasures unearthed from the remarkable civilizations that constructed vast mud adobe cities along Peru's coastline and incredible settlements in the valleys and mountains. The Barranco district serves as Lima's artistic hub, where you can stroll between modern art galleries and visit the local icon, the Bridge of Sighs. This charming wooden bridge is a favourite among artists and is considered one of the city's most romantic locations. Afterward, indulge in Lima's culinary delights, particularly the zesty flavours of spicy, lime-marinated fish ceviche. So cherished in the region, ceviche even has its own national day on June 28th. To conclude your visit to this captivating, multi-dimensional city, enjoy a refreshing Pisco Sour.
